A Brief History of Comfort ISD
1856-2007 and beyond
Comfort
Independent School District was formed by German immigrants in 1856, just two years after the founding of the
town. Education has always been important to the people of this
community in the Texas Hill Country.
Today, our schools strive to meet the needs of over 1,100 students as we reach into the twenty-first century.
The first permanent school building was built in 1892. This limestone structure still stands in service today.
The bell tower pictured here is a replica of the original tower placed on the 1892 building. The tower was removed in 1922 when a second floor was added. The replica tower was built in 1987, and houses the original bell from the school. The bell is rung by Comfort Middle School students at 8:00 each morning to begin the school day.
Since that first building, a High School was added in 1939, an Elementary in 1953, and a new Comfort High School in 1997. The 1892 building has served as a major part of Comfort Middle and High Schools for many years. With the opening of the new high school, all the buildings on the original Middle School/High School campus became Comfort Middle School. These buildings are pictured on their campus web pages.
There have been many additions to the schools as our student population has grown. In January, 2001, we opened a new classroom building at Comfort Elementary and a new Classroom & Cafeteria building at Comfort Middle School.
With the passage of a bond issue in November, 2006, additions are being made at all three campuses. Comfort Elementary will receive a new Pre-K & K wing, the middle school will receive a new gymnasium, weight room, and classrooms, and the high school will add 6 classrooms, two labs, an Agriculture improvement, a building trades facility, and a second field house. The bond issue also covers paving and other Americans with Disabilities Act improvements. This expansion is scheduled to open in the fall of 2008.
During the fall term of 2001-2002, the original 1892 building was remodeled to restore the lower floor to conditions similar to those in 1922 It is the new home of the Comfort ISD's Information Technology Department. Though it no longer services students each day, it continues to provide vital services supporting and enhancing education for students, teachers, administrators, and visitors of our schools.
