We have two full time registered nurses and one full time licensed vocational nurse on staff. The school clinics are to be used for the purpose of receiving first aid treatment for injuries and/or illnesses, taking prescribed medications, receiving specialized medical treatments, or talking with the nurse about individual health concerns. We are available for conferences with parents, teachers and physicians to insure the health and safety of each child. We perform state mandated screenings: vision and hearing (grades PK, K, 1, 3, 5, & 7 as well as students new to the district); spinal (grades 5 & 8) and acanthosis nigricans (visual screening to identify students at risk for developing Type II diabetes in grades 1, 3, 5, & 7 for the children each year. We notify parents if there is a concern that needs to be evaluated by a physician and/or specialist. We perform a multitude of classes (i.e., hygiene, handwashing, dental, maturation, abstinence education) each year. We are responsible for organizing many of the programs offered at school (i.e., Worth The Wait: the University of Texas Health Science Center Sex Education Program which teaches abstinence as the healthiest choice for teens, Blood Drives, and vaccination clinics. We are responsible for following the Regulations and Programs established by the Texas Education Agency and the Texas Department of Health and in turn write policies as needed to implement the regulations set forth concerning school health related issues within our district. We strive to provide the best care possible to promote the health of the children and faculty of Comfort ISD.
