2016 Region IV Golf Tournament
Quail Creek Country Club – San Marcos Texas
Monday and Tuesday, April 11th and 12th
The Comfort Ladies Golf Team captured their second straight Region IV golf team championship this past Tuesday at Quail Creek Country Club in San Marcos. The Deer led wire to wire. At the end of a hot afternoon round with highs near 85⁰ on Monday. The ladies from Comfort had an 8 stroke lead over the Cowgirls of Edna and the Lady Vikings from Lago Vista. Junior Loren Nevers posted an 86 which was 3 strokes behind Clarissa Gonzalez of Bishop. Senior Maddie Maltsberger turned in a first day 103, followed by Alex Ely (102), Bailey Dulas (127), and Delaney Petermann with a new personal best of 108.
Tuesday might have had a different feel with morning temperatures in the 50’s and overcast skies, but the Deer did not disappoint.
Loren Nevers turned in the low round of the tournament with an 81 and bested Gonzalez by 10 strokes on the day becoming the overall tournament champion. One highlight of the day for Nevers was a near eagle chip on #12. Her second shot on the par 5 was just right of the green with a bunker between her and the pin. Her Mickelson-esque pitch put her Titleist golf ball within an inch of the cup. Loren has already had two eagles this season.
Sophomore Alex Ely also had a great round and scored her new personal best of 90 including a birdie on #17. Ely finished the tournament 4th overall behind Nevers, Gonzalez, and Lady Pirate August Garcia of Mathis who took 3rd.
Senior Maddie “Mad Dog” Maltsberger had a great day two with her round of 95. Junior Delaney Petermann who just took up the sport this season contributed a 116 for the day and Junior Bailey Dulas posted a 122.
The Comfort Ladies will return to the state tournament at Grey Rock Golf Club in Austin on April 27th and 28th. The Deer finished second overall last year and brought home the first silver medal in school history.
“The girls and I are excited about returning to the state tournament and representing the community of Comfort. We are grateful for all the support and will give it our best.” Josh Dunn
